Do you ever have a difficult time deciding what project to begin? For a writer, it can be the cause of the blank screen cursor curse. Sometimes I have so many projects going I start working on one, just to keep thinking about another. My New Year's resolution is to write the story that wants to be written the most. That's not as easy as it sounds. As an ADHD personality, for the sake of time management and sane functionality, I have had to learn to pretend to be a linear thinker so that I can organize and format a focused process for both beginning and finishing a project (aka story). I always have more than one story idea swirling in my head. Not all writer's block is caused by no ideas. Often the blank page is a result of too much to write and not enough time in a lifetime to get it all written. The linear process I have adopted for this problem is to ask myself a series of questions: 1) which idea most appeals to me, with no not-quite-ready mental lag, 2) which idea would most appeal to the market (face it, it HAS to be sellable unless you're just writing for your grandma), and 3) perhaps this is due to the retired educator in me, but I like to constantly push my learning curve, so I don't want to write same ole safe slop, I want to write the story that will help me grow and learn as a writer. An idea that shouts yes to the lot is the story that quickly begins to fill that blank page. Having made the decision, the blank pages become fresh opportunity and the blink cursor is moving so fast, I don't even notice it. To all you undecided writers out there, make a decision and embrace it! Happy New Year! To read and/or write more words from writers, click on the following icon and linky link!

Click Graphic Below to Go There! Virtually everyone knows what it feels like to be scared. Most people react physically as well as emotionally. When frightened, your heart beats faster, your breathing keeps pace, and the hormone adrenaline pumps out the energy boost to maintain this fight or flight, on the edge of your seat condition. Emotionally, most people have negative reactions to fear, feeling stressed, endangered, helpless, vulnerable or even angry. However, they can also feel good, and most people do. |
Everyone has heard of fairies, of creatures with supernatural powers to curse, to bless, to find gold, or to cause mischief. Literature and art is full of them from Shakespeare to contemporary artists Amy Brown or Jasmine Beckett-Griffith. Western culture, especially in the US, is bred on Disney’s Tinker Bell, children’s books of flower fairies from Victorian artists, and grim tales of the darker side of these Fae folk.
In Ireland, fairies, known as the Sídhe (pronounced shee) or the Good Folk, originate from the Tuatha Dé Danann, the people who immigrated to the island before the Sons of Míl. Supposedly full of powers, the Tuatha Dé Danann could not bear to be near iron, and therefore their superior skills were for naught. Rather than leave the land they loved, they agreed to reside below the earth. For this reason, caves are said to be entrances into their underworld homes. Traces of this legend can be seen in the classic film, Darby O’Gill and the Little People, where Darby is led under a mountain to the Fairy King’s palace.
Ireland has countless portals, be they hills, hawthorn trees, caves, wells, or other sacred places.
A more Christianized origin of these creatures claim they are angels which fell to Earth before humans resided there. They live beneath the waves or gardens, and while some are evil, others can be helpful as long as they are treated with respect.
While many modern legends show the fairies to be sweet, kind, magical creatures, this is really a Victorian creation. The traditional views in Ireland and Scotland show the Sídhe to be mischievous to the point of cruelty a force to be reckoned with. They are not sought out by the wise. In fact, most of the herb and spell lore of an almost forgotten era is meant to instruct how to keep you from coming to the Folks’ attention.

Interview!
My book is about Ireland – some myth and history, a bit about the land, culture, people and beliefs, some planning tips on making your own journey, and a huge section of hidden places to find. Oh, and lots of photographs!
When did you start writing the book?
In May 2011, after I returned from my fourth trip to Ireland.
How long did it take you to write it?
About a year and a half. I didn’t have a publisher until I was finished, so I left it for long periods of time.
Where did you get the idea from?
I had always written trip reports from each vacation, and I had written an article on planning a trip there. I had also self-published a couple photojournals of my trips, so this seemed like the logical next step towards professional travel writing.
Were there any parts of the book where you struggled?
Some of the history part – while I know a lot of Irish history, there are some areas (mostly more modern times) that I tend to gloss over in my mind. I prefer ancient history, the prehistoric and early recorded times. It was also difficult to find ways to make this section interesting to read, as history is a subject most people find tedious.
What came easily?
The myth section – stories and tales of gods, battles and curses! That was great fun!
Are your characters entirely self-fabricated, or did you borrow from real world or existing fictitious people you know?
I don’t really have characters, as this is non-fiction – so any characters are already created in myth.
We all know how important it is for writers to read. Are there any particular authors that have influenced how you write and, if so, how have they influenced you?
I have read all my life, and the authors I like most are those that have a sense of humor. Whether in fiction, like Diana Gabaldon or Robert Heinlein, or in travel writing like Bill Bryson, I think people love to laugh, and the ability to inspire that laughter is precious.
Do you have a target reader?
Someone who has an interest in Ireland, or in the mysterious.
What is your writing process?
I write in spurts of furious activity, interspersed with periods of extreme laziness and disinterest.
Do you outline or are you a pantser?
I definitely outline, and usually follow that outline in order. However, sometimes I’ll skip around a bit, section to section. If I do that too much, though, I know I’ll be left with the boring bits, so I try not to ‘eat the dessert first’, so to speak, or I’ll run out of steam for the project.
Do you edit as you go or wait until you’ve finished?
I have to edit as I go, because I’m horrible at self-editing afterwards. I know this sounds bad, but I find it hard to read my own writing. I tend to gloss over things in my mind, because it was already there, so I don’t need to read it again!
Do you listen to music while you write? If yes, what sets the right mood?
I do – mostly Irish folk and fusion music. Anything from Enya to the Dropkick Murphys, Afro Celt Sounds System, Altan, the Chieftains. Occasionally I have yearnings for cheesy 1980s New Wave, though!

Something hard and cold with jagged edges pressed into his back.
When he tried to move, iron shackles strained against the skin of his arms and legs. Chained to a rock in a dry stream bed, he knew he’d become a helpless prisoner who could do nothing more than wait for his captor. Stormy skies threatened from directly above him with bright flares of lightning snaking among sooty clouds and disappearing. Out of the corner of his eye, he could detect that the sun was shining brightly on the other side of the rock.
Scant rays of brilliant sunshine peeked over the rock, reflecting bright light off a magnificent golden shrine on a bank not far from where he was chained.
This can’t be real. He’d never seen a place like this in his life.
Large wet drops crashed against his skin. The coolness of the rain streaking down his body caused steam to rise from his skin, which he noticed had turned a dark shade of crimson. The only being this red was….
“Lucifer,” a calm voice echoed from above Jeff on the shoreline.
A giant, dressed in white armor sparkling like diamonds in the spare sunlight, stepped into view. He wielded a golden-hilted silver sword in one hand and a silver shield with the Latin inscription “Quis ut Deus” (I am like God) on the front in the other hand. He loomed above Jeff. A large gold cross ran down the center of the giant’s breastplate. A second inlaid golden cross glinted at the center of his white helmet. The helmet obscured his face, save for flawless ivory skin which radiated a blinding light. There
was something across his back casting a large shadow, but Jeff couldn’t see what it was.
“You were thinking of Lucifer, whose skin is often portrayed as red,” the giant said. The ivory giant stepped into full view. From his back a pair of massive wings spanned over ten feet wide and five feet long majestically fluttering in the breeze, yet didn’t cast a shadow. The rain pelting Jeff in the eyes didn’t touch this giant. He certainly was no man. The only thing Jeff could compare it to would be--
“An angel,” the giant completed Jeff’s sentence again. “You are correct.”

Before Joseph took to spinning his own tales, he pursued a career in print sports journalism, graduating summa cum laude from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. He covered such events as NASCAR’s Subway 500 race in Martinsville, the NBA Draft Camp in Chicago, the Junior College World Series, and Minor League Baseball’s Midwest League All-Star Game during a ten-year career throughout the Midwest. Now, he works as an emergency telecommunications specialist with an Illinois police department. The combination of years of writing experience with a background working with law enforcement professionals gave rise to his writing aspirations.
Joseph was married to Dr. Amy (Waggoner) Spencer, an accomplished veterinary doctor, on March 14, 2012. He received word his debut novel was accepted by his publisher, Damnation Books, the next day. Joseph is hard at work on the rest of the series. Book 2 – Wrage – was released June 1, 2013. The Spencer family enjoys reading Charlaine Harris, George R.R. Martin, Mary Janice Davidson, and most paranormal stories. The Spencers also enjoy quoting movie lines from “The Princess Bride”, “Rain Man”, “Bridesmaids”, and “Office Space.”
Interview with Joseph Spencer!
It’s an occult crime thriller in which the title character Jeff Wrage must decide whether he will surrender his humanity and morality to gain vengeance on his wife’s killer.
When did you start writing the book?
My debut novel Grim came out September 2012. I started writing Wrage shortly before Grim was released. It made editing Grim more difficult because I was going back and forth between the two stories. It took me awhile to remember the different parts of Grim because I already started a different part of the story for Wrage.
How long did it take you to write it?
I learned the lesson of saving my manuscript in several different places. I lost about 40-50 pages of work with a hardware crash on a laptop, so that delayed my writing time so that it took me nearly a full year.
Where did you get the idea from?
I try to write stories that I would want to read. I found inspiration in Jeff Lindsay’s Dexter books, storylines from graphic novels, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories, mythology, the TV show Supernatural and Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight movie trilogy.
Were there any parts of the book where you struggled?
I write different viewpoint characters, and when I am wrapped up in that character it’s hard to not add too much detail into that character’s back story. One of the critiques of my writing was that for some people I had too many detailed characters and it took them a while to figure out everything that is going on. I’ve actually edited out a lot of material from lesser characters in both novels.
What came easily?
The lead characters and their storylines came pretty easily. I had an idea of writing a crime novel blended with an occult horror story because I didn’t want to write the same old crime novel. As I did research with references to the war between the Sons of Darkness and the Sons of Light in the Dead Sea Scrolls, the title characters in my novel took shape. I work at a 9-1-1 emergency communications center for my full-time job so I am around police officers all the time. I try to impart some of their personalities into those characters.
Are your characters entirely self-fabricated, or did you borrow from real world or existing fictitious people you know?
Every character I’ve written is either a part of me or someone I have known. I think you write about a subject better when you’ve got intimate knowledge of it. It’s harder to forget details when you know something well. So, I don’t forget how I want a character to act because I know how the person in real life acts.
We all know how important it is for writers to read. Are there any particular authors that have influenced how you write and, if so, how have they influenced you?
I loved Jeff Lindsay’s dark humor in the Dexter series, so I try to add some humor among the gory carnage in the novels. I also enjoyed Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles and Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse and Harper Connelly novels, so that inspired me to go with supernatural storylines. I also found inspiration in Sherlock Holmes stories and the scary thrillers written by Thomas Harris.
Do you have a target reader?
My novels are definitely for an adult audience. A lot of reviewers and fans mentioned the gore of Grim may have had a little too much detail, so I toned that down a bit in Wrage. I try to find my sweet spot with readers who enjoy both horror and murder mysteries.
What is your writing process?
I work 50 to 60 hours for my full-time job, so I break down my writing assignments to 3-4 pages per day. I’ve found that’s an attainable goal and by hitting the small daily goals it adds up to a complete novel over time. It’s hard to start and stop so much. I’ve found that I do struggle with repeating some of the story and have to edit that out when I don’t catch that during the initial write.
Do you outline or are you a pantser?
I’ve got a rough outline so that I know what I want to accomplish in each chapter and scene, but I tend to be a pantser with the details. I like to let the characters take over and go off in directions I didn’t necessarily think about when I started the planning phase of the book.
Do you edit as you go or wait until you’ve finished?
I try to self edit as I go, but there is always work to be done when you’re finished. I welcome constructive criticism from editors because it makes your writing stronger.
Do you listen to music while you write? If yes, what sets the right mood?
I don’t listen to anything when I write. I’ve got to be completely focused with as little noise as possible. I tend to write in my recliner late at night with the only light from my laptop. It helps me get locked in on the scene I’m writing.

Excerpt
“Rose,” he murmured against her ear, “Rosie.”
A deep ache began throbbing low in her body, and she cupped her hands on either side of his face, pulling his mouth back to hers.
His lips moved against hers again, his tongue slipping in. She tangled her fingers in his hair, rasping her own tongue along his.
Her heart rate accelerated almost painfully. Her clothes felt too tight, and there were far too many of them. She wanted to pull them off and toss them at her feet. No, she wanted him to pull them off and toss them—anywhere.
She moved her hands to his chest, fingers tugging at the buttons on his chambray shirt. His hands moved to her waist, jerking her T-shirt free and moving to the button on her shorts.
Something hard hit the window with a shuddering thump that seemed to echo throughout the room.
She jerked back from his embrace as Helen galloped into the room beside them, snarling at the curtains.
“What the hell?” Evan flipped his shirt back over his chest, but not before she’d seen a sizzling expanse of muscle and dark hair.
Well, damn!
She turned to check the front windows. A crack ran down the entire length of one of them, smaller cracks radiating from the center.
Helen danced in front of the lacy sheers, barking frantically now.
“Helen, cut it out,” Rose murmured, moving beside her. The fog still swirled, silvery and dense, just beyond the glass. She leaned forward.
A large black object ricocheted off the window next to her, shuddering the glass in the wooden frame.

Years ago, my husband bought me Scarlett: The Sequel to Gone With The Wind. If you ever saw the book, you know it’s a long one. I sat and read that thing from cover to cover, and dreamed of one day being a writer. But I didn’t actually try my hand at writing until years later when I quit my teaching job to stay home with my kids. And my husband? After that week of reading where I neglected him and everything else until I finished Scarlett, he vowed never to buy me another book again. Little did he know I’d one day end up sitting at a keyboard all day drafting my own stories.
My writing journey has not been easy. I didn’t just sit down one day, decide I was going to write a book and voila! sell my very first attempt. As most authors will probably agree, the path to publication is filled with hours of work, pulling all-nighters I thought I’d given up in college, sacrifices, rejections, but a love I discovered along the way I just can’t live without. Instead of a big, thick book to read by lamplight (I do read much smaller ones when I get the chance), I’ve traded in my reading obsession for a laptop. And I’ve never been happier.
I’m one of the lucky ones. I have a wonderful family and fabulous husband who put up with my writing—and obsessive personality—even when life is chaotic. More than once my kids have been late to swimming or baseball because I needed just five more minutes to finish a scene. Their support and encouragement mean the world to me. I also have amazing friends and a support network I couldn’t survive without. So to all of you out there who have encouraged me along the way, sent me emails and fan letters, phone calls and congratulations, I just want to say, thank you. You make this whole writing gig that much more enjoyable. I truly wouldn’t be here without you.
Dark Tides: Book I
Isabelle Bryant is one of the “lucky” survivors, now living in hiding, scavenging for food through deserted towns.
And she’s tired of it.
So she’s devised a plan: find the king of the vampires and drive a stake through his heart.
Except that wickedly sensual king Marcus is nothing like the monster she expected. And while landing on his bed was part of the plan all along, discovering that he might hold the key to humanity’s survival certainly wasn’t. The catch? Saving humanity also means ensuring vampire survival. It means giving up hope for a return to a human-ruled world.
As sparks fly and hate becomes heat, Isabelle must pick a side -- before the darkness devours them all.

your covers while you're sleeping, chances are I've written about it. It's probably no surprise that I'm a big fan of old buildings, urban exploring and
things that go bump in the night. Oh, and Halloween, of course -- but that
should go without saying.
Growing up, I wanted to be Indiana Jones. I ended up not pursuing a degree in Archaeology (although I toyed with the idea for a while) but I did become a huge lover of travel and history. Aside from traveling to all corners of the world, I've also lived in five countries in three continents -- including three years in Siberia and two in Vietnam. I'm currently living in Thailand.
I have a soft spot for animals (which is why you can be sure that in my stories, the dog will always make it) and right now have three wonderful -- but slightly crazy -- dogs in my life. And yes, they move with me from country to country. Too bad dogs can't accumulate frequent flyer miles!
In my other life, I also write nonfiction: articles, books, and even quizzes for the Discovery Channel website. I really can't help it -- I'm a nerd at heart and love research and discovering new things. Could be the Indiana Jones in me pushing me along.
When it comes to life, I'm pretty fearless. I figure life is too short to live it too safely -- so I take risks and I try to have fun, whether that means snowshoeing in the middle of Siberia or going ghost-hunting in an abandoned asylum. And yes, I've done both.

It was that velvety tone again, the one she couldn’t fight, or at this moment
didn’t want to.
His chest felt hard under her hands as she leant against him. His heart raced
and hers matched its speed. He pulled her shoulder length hair aside and a
shiver ran from the nape of her neck to the bottom of her spine. He kissed her gently, his cool lips barely touching hers but causing an ache at her core. She wanted him but had to pull away; she had seen his fangs and remembered the fear that had coursed through her at the moment he had killed someone before her.
It all came back like She held her breath as she lowered the car window and
watched mesmerized as they performed their hypnotic dance. Shit, they had
knives. Common sense told her to leave but she couldn’t draw her eyes away. Now she had a story. Every step appeared calculated as they circled each other like trained fighters. One made a lunge forward but the other moved before he could connect. It must have been the flickering light through the trees affecting her eyes because their movements seemed fast enough to blur. The taller one thrust a knife into his opponent’s chest and the injured man collapsed to his knees. Oh my god, it’s a murder. The ground rumbled again shaking the car but this time she held on tight to the camera. A fight to the death in the Parklands and an earthquake, maybe she would make the front page after all. It was about time her luck came through. She just needed to stay calm and get closer for a picture. Opening the car door as quietly as she could she crept to the nearest tree and hid. She needed one picture for proof and then she could drive away and call the police. It wasn’t vampires or mass murderers, but maybe she’d get a promotion.
She could see the headline.
Fatal Stabbing between Husband and Wife’s Lover in Parklands during
Earthquake.
...pictures on a movie screen being played in her head. The fight, the blood,
the killing. But then the pictures blurred and went dark, her panicked heart
rate slowed, and a sense of trust and calm took over her body. Of course she
could help him, that’s what friends do; it was no big deal for her to give him
some of her blood. There was a stinging sensation on her neck and her body
tingled and the yearning for him intensified as he fed. She needed to be closer to him. One of her hands reached up and held his head against her throat increasing the pressure of his fangs as he fed, the sensation an intoxicating mix of pleasure and pain.
