The heroine, Lady Isabella Valentine, has been hired to retrieve the same artifact from an anonymous benefactor, who has sent a helper, David Khoury, to assist her on the archaeological dig. Prince Mukhtar wishes to change her mind. This current scene is where you find out a bit more about the prince. “What else could I do? The Usurper got to her first,” said Mukhtar, raising his voice to be heard above the tinkling bells on camel bridles, bleating goats, and the reverberations of sprayed sand against the outer walls of the pavilion. The cool night winds whipped against the goatskin sides of the tent, and helped bellow the smoke from the inner fire up the chimney flaps high above their heads. Shadows played across his father’s chiseled features, illuminated by firelight as they sat cross-legged on cushions, relaxing after a bountiful feast provided for the benefit of their honored guest. The darkness prevented him from gauging his father’s emotion. He disliked disappointing him, for he respected this man he loved, this man whose men followed him with blind devotion due not to his wealth and position, but because of his fearless prowess as a soldier and his wise and just leadership abilities. “The queen is going to be displeased that you were unable to secure the woman’s map, or at least her services,” said his father thoughtfully. “Wait, Abdul, we don’t have to involve my mother yet,” said Prince Anubis. “After all, Mukhtar may still be able to plant himself in Lady Isabella’s party.” I hope you enjoyed the snippet I posted for Elizabeth today. She has been busy baking Christmas cookies and candy, which she won't even share with me. So as soon as I am done with this I am going to go snooping around in the kitchen looking forlorn so she will give me a doggie cookie! Welcome to Decadent Decem-brr Demure Reads Blog Hop!
I moved from Michigan to escape the frozen north and enjoy the sunny climate of Arizona, but that doesn't mean I don't sometimes miss the hot cocoa evenings with a good book in front of a warm fire, with the Christmas lights glowing on the tree in the foyer outside my library doors.
My skis may lie abandoned in my shed now, but I do still curl up with a good book with the Christmas lights glowing. I just seldom light a fire in the fireplace, and sometimes turn on the ceiling fan and open the sliding door to let in the cool evening air here in the desert. And there is still a lot of adventure to be had here in the desert--which is where many of the exciting scenes from my books take place, Egyptian tombs, desert palaces hidden with enchantment, and even the underworld. Be sure to check out my Illuminati series if you'd like to heat your winter up a bit!
One random commenter will also receive a copy of The Book of Life, the first in my Illuminati series!

The heroine, Lady Isabella Valentine, has been hired to retrieve the same artifact from an anonymous benefactor, who has sent a helper, David Khoury, to assist her on the archaeological dig. Prince Mukhtar wishes to change her mind. This current scene is from just after the prince has left her shop. She stared at the door long after the bell stopped jingling, wondering just exactly why so many people were interested in this particular relic, and how they could have discovered so quickly that she had recently acquired the map to its whereabouts. One was perhaps a coincidence, but two in the same day meant trouble. Big trouble, and more secrets than she, in her excitement over this morning’s hefty paycheck, had bothered to investigate. What had she gotten herself into? The door flew open and she jumped, then relaxed once she recognized her cleaning woman. “Hello, Misha,” she said. “Good evening, Lady Isabella,” Misha said, turning to bolt the door behind her, before crossing the shop and disappearing into the Persian rug labyrinth, seeking cleaning supplies. Isabella reached into her pocket and pulled out her cell phone, because she knew one thing for sure, she needed backup. I hope you enjoyed the snippet I posted for Elizabeth today. I was a little late since I overslept. It's not my fault though. I had to wait up for Elizabeth who was at the 4th Avenue Tucson Street Fair, whatever that is. All I know is it's a terrible thing because it made my dinner late. If over 600,000 people attend it in one weekend, there must be a lot of hungry doggies! Five years from now I see myself walking in the dunes of an Egyptian movie set, watching them film my Illuminati series. Okay, well that may be a bit ambitious, but there's no reason one can't dream and to that end I have begun to try getting my work into the hands of film makers. I have a friend who has written the screenplay and novelization for movies, and another whose book rights have been purchased by Speilberg, though they have not yet announced plans to begin filming. So I do know it's possible, which is why I have been working diligently to increase my output and PR distribution. I have been trying to write every day, even it's just a paragraph or two. For me, that's a huge shift in my writing habits. NANO should spawn a MANO and a JUNO!
NaNo sure helped me work toward my writing goals. I wonder how many writers have had their writing goals inspired by NaNo? Have you? Spread the word, share the love, warriors. Twitter hashtag #8sunday. I polishing Stolen Secrets so will continue to share from this Fantasy Romance. The heroine, Lady Isabella Valentine, has been hired to retrieve the same artifact from an anonymous benefactor, who has sent a helper, David Khoury, to assist her on the archaeological dig. Prince Mukhtar wishes to change her mind. Here’s a bit from where I left off last week, with the prince speaking to Isabella in her antiquities shop, right after she told him someone else already hired her . . . "The chalice itself is not essential, if it is already sought by another. What we seek is the symbol not revealed here in this sketch. It may be a missing key for the interpretation of another artifact.” “Oh, I honestly don’t know if that is a possibility or not. I can speak to my client and discover whether or not they object to what you suggest,” Isabella said, managing to pull her hand free, and burying it in the folds of her skirt. She took a step back. His request seemed perfectly innocent, but she was convinced it was anything but transparent and she couldn’t think straight with him gazing into her eyes like that. He was so close she could smell the appealing aroma of rich espresso with cinnamon he had enjoyed recently. It was her own favorite after work pick-me-up. I hope you enjoyed the snippet I posted for Elizabeth this week. I'm sure glad NaNo is over! Now I get more attention and lots and lots of hugs. My treats are on time again too. Yea! It's NaNoWriMo, and my very first time participating in it, so of course you will be getting excerpts from my WIP, a novella, Stolen Secrets! If you have been following Book II of my Illuminati series, The Tree of Life, you will know that I just introduced a minor character, Prince Mukhtar, who appears in both Book I, The Book of Life, and Book 11, of the Illuminati Series. He is also the hero of a Romance Fantasy Novella I am writing for NaNoWriMo, a little spinoff adventure! In it, Isis has sent him to retrieve a chalice to be used in a ceremony that will break the spell the jinni, Ornias (from my short horror story) has cast upon the Ring of Solomon, before their mortal enemy, Set, can get his hands on it. The heroine, Lady Isabella Valentine, has been hired to retrieve the same artifact from an anonymous benefactor, who has sent a helper, David Khoury, to assist her on the archaeological dig. Prince Mukhtar wishes to change her mind. Here’s a bit from where I left off last week . . . (*Note: It's NaNo, so may be a bit rough in spots.) He made no move to accept it, but instead chuckled, a rich, deep timber that made her smile in response until he said, “Now you have not answered my question,” and she wished she had just shared an intimate joke so they could become better acquainted instead of parting company. “My services are already engaged, which is why I am not at liberty to say,” she said softly, lifting her hand and waving the sketch at him. He reached out to take the paper, but instead of accepting it, he clasped her hand and cradled it within his own. Something flickered in his eyes. Disappointment? Annoyance? I hope you liked the snippet I posted for Elizabeth this week while she's busy with NaNo! She gave me a chewy to play with and it even squeaks, so she can do whatever she wants as far as I'm concerned. I love toys! During NaNo I've been working on, and sharing snippets from, a Romance Fantasy that stars a support character from my Illuminati series, so here's an excerpt from Book I in the series!
Excerpt
She drew her bottom lip into her mouth, considering. Vargas was looking at her in a strange way, his gaze focused, probing, as he considering Rashid’s words. She wished Rashid had not revealed so much to this stranger. What must he think of a father who would allow his daughter to be whipped? She could just imagine what he would think of a father who had ordered it done. He didn’t say a word, but just kept staring at her as though it had just occurred to him that she might have problems and obligations to equal his own. Why did she care what he thought?
Honesty, she decided, would work better than torture with him. “Rashid, Arai, take the Bedouin. I wish to speak to Vargas alone,” she announced. Summary
Ljluka Vargas, immortal prince and the cool-headed enforcer for the Vargas Dynasty, must go up against his most intriguing enemy, the mysterious Nalini. She intends to beat him to the secret archaeological site of The Book of Life which contains the genetic secrets of their ancient ancestors.
In order to escape the cruel domination of her family and gain freedom for her mother, Nalini assumes the role of assassin. In her rival, the sleek and deadly Luc, she finds a different kind of danger. She’s supposed to eliminate him, but that would foil destiny’s plan for them to be together. It’s a race from power-hungry D.C. cabinet rooms through the secret realms of the Vatican, from cloud forests and desert sands to the caverns of the Underworld as mankind hangs in the balance. For whoever possesses the Book of Life has the potential to rule the world, offering or denying immortality to the human race. She took the drawing, happy to distract herself from the intensity of his stare, the penetrating azure gaze that both took her breath away and made her want to gasp in gulps of air to fuel the manic beating of her heart at his nearness. Then, recognition made her take in a slow, deep breath, as she willed herself to remain outwardly calm. She looked up and said, “May I ask why you are seeking this?” “So you are familiar with the piece,” he said as fact and not a question, and the small smile he bestowed upon her matched the warmth in his voice as if she had just passed some test at which he had hoped she would excel. “Yes, of course. Most in my field would recognize The Chalice of Isis. But you didn’t answer my question,” she persisted. “I have a buyer with bottomless pockets, of course. And do you know where it is located?” he asked, small dimples appearing in his cheeks. “I’m afraid I can’t help you,” Isabella said, handing him back the sketch. I hope you liked the snippet I posted for Elizabeth this week while she's busy with NaNo! She gave me popcorn, so she can do whatever she wants as far as I'm concerned. I love popcorn! Here’s a bit from where I left off last week . . . (*Note: It's NaNo, so may be a bit rough in spots.) “W-what?” She glanced toward the door and noted two more Bedouins, standing sentry on either side of the entryway. More, she knew, would be outside, no doubt tending to the beautiful black stallion of Prince Mukhtar, eldest son and heir of Sheikh Abdul Kummel al-Rahman, Leader of the Hassana. The gold agal of his kuffiyah might as well have been a crown, but the entourage he traveled with assured his identity could not be mistaken. “Forgive me, Lady Valentine,” he replied, this time in flawless English. “Allow me to introduce myself.” She held up her hand, and said, “No need for that, Prince Mukhtar. Everyone in Cairo knows who you are. But please do explain what you are talking about.” He bowed his head politely, and took a step closer. Looking down at her, he said softly, “Of course, My Lady, with pleasure; I wish to procure your services as an archaeologist. I seek this,” he said, pulling a drawing from somewhere within his robe and extending it toward her. I hope you enjoyed the snippet I posted for Elizabeth this week as she is crazy busy with something called NaNo. It isn't something you can eat.
