We left off at Kirin trying to get her parents to let her accompany her brother Luc to America to find Rio, He managed to get away from them once, in Rio, and then in the rainforests of Brazil he shapeshifted and escaped from her mother. They have found out that he is in Sedona, and Isis wants him captured and sent to the underworld. Kirin has other plans, but doesn't want her mother to know or interfere. Rio thought of his gift as a curse, a curse that her ancestors had caused. He couldn’t know that of course. Could he? “It’s settled then,” her father was saying. “Muhktar’s a great operative,” Luc said. “He just helped return Ornias to where he belonged.” “This scientist is hardly evil, and certainly not a Jinn,” Kirin snapped, before she could stop herself. “And you know this how?” Sekhmet asked, her attention riveted to Kirin’s face and her eyebrows lifted in curious expectation. Kirin clamped her jaws together. She could feel her mother’s stare boring into her, knowing with certainty without even probing her thoughts that Kirin knew more than she would admit. I hope you enjoyed the snippet I posted for Elizabeth today. She has been sick all week and had something called hives because she took some medicine she was allergic to. She scratched more than a doggie without flea medicine, but when I tried to lick the little bumps and make them better she stopped me. They finally went away by themselves, not if only her cold would go away too. She's not nearly as much fun as usual! ;( Please visit the other Weekend Writing Warriors and #snippetsunday authors for more great reads!

Since Stolen Secrets, my Illuminati Fantasy Romance Spin-Off novel is in final edits and will be released soon, I am going to share some more from my second book in the Illuminati Series which will be coming out next: The Tree of Life. The royal immortals are gathered and discussing who will be going to Sedona, AZ, after Rio, the Black Jaguar shapeshifter whose family genetic "defects" are the responsibility of the ancients, the ancestors of the royal immortal family, the Illuminati founders. “I know who Mukhtar is, I was just wondering why you felt the need to send him with us to America when he's to be married soon, and--” “Yes, and we are all invited and wouldn’t think of missing the wedding,” Osiris said. “The wedding is still two months away. His going with you will keep him out of the way while the bride plans the wedding,” Isis insisted. Dammit, Kirin thought. Her mother was determined to control Rio’s capture. He wasn’t just some monster, a genetic defect as Sekhmet claimed. She was sure of it. No way was she letting them imprison him in the underworld with the true beasts and monsters. He was an intelligent human, a brilliant scientist who just happened to have a rare gift. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday. I sure did. I got a new toy and lots of doggie treats and had so much fun playing with my family. The snippet I posted for Elizabeth today is from her Work in Progress. The heroine, Lady Isabella Valentine, has been hired to retrieve the same artifact from an anonymous benefactor, who has sent a helper, David Khoury, to assist her on the archaeological dig. Prince Mukhtar wishes to change her mind. This current scene is where you find out a bit more about the prince. “What else could I do? The Usurper got to her first,” said Mukhtar, raising his voice to be heard above the tinkling bells on camel bridles, bleating goats, and the reverberations of sprayed sand against the outer walls of the pavilion. The cool night winds whipped against the goatskin sides of the tent, and helped bellow the smoke from the inner fire up the chimney flaps high above their heads. Shadows played across his father’s chiseled features, illuminated by firelight as they sat cross-legged on cushions, relaxing after a bountiful feast provided for the benefit of their honored guest. The darkness prevented him from gauging his father’s emotion. He disliked disappointing him, for he respected this man he loved, this man whose men followed him with blind devotion due not to his wealth and position, but because of his fearless prowess as a soldier and his wise and just leadership abilities. “The queen is going to be displeased that you were unable to secure the woman’s map, or at least her services,” said his father thoughtfully. “Wait, Abdul, we don’t have to involve my mother yet,” said Prince Anubis. “After all, Mukhtar may still be able to plant himself in Lady Isabella’s party.” I hope you enjoyed the snippet I posted for Elizabeth today. The heroine, Lady Isabella Valentine, has been hired to retrieve the same artifact from an anonymous benefactor, who has sent a helper, David Khoury, to assist her on the archaeological dig. Prince Mukhtar wishes to change her mind. This current scene is from just after the prince has left her shop. She stared at the door long after the bell stopped jingling, wondering just exactly why so many people were interested in this particular relic, and how they could have discovered so quickly that she had recently acquired the map to its whereabouts. One was perhaps a coincidence, but two in the same day meant trouble. Big trouble, and more secrets than she, in her excitement over this morning’s hefty paycheck, had bothered to investigate. What had she gotten herself into? The door flew open and she jumped, then relaxed once she recognized her cleaning woman. “Hello, Misha,” she said. “Good evening, Lady Isabella,” Misha said, turning to bolt the door behind her, before crossing the shop and disappearing into the Persian rug labyrinth, seeking cleaning supplies. Isabella reached into her pocket and pulled out her cell phone, because she knew one thing for sure, she needed backup. I hope you enjoyed the snippet I posted for Elizabeth today. I was a little late since I overslept. It's not my fault though. I had to wait up for Elizabeth who was at the 4th Avenue Tucson Street Fair, whatever that is. All I know is it's a terrible thing because it made my dinner late. If over 600,000 people attend it in one weekend, there must be a lot of hungry doggies! The heroine, Lady Isabella Valentine, has been hired to retrieve the same artifact from an anonymous benefactor, who has sent a helper, David Khoury, to assist her on the archaeological dig. Prince Mukhtar wishes to change her mind. Here’s a bit from where I left off last week, with the prince speaking to Isabella in her antiquities shop, right after she told him someone else already hired her . . . "The chalice itself is not essential, if it is already sought by another. What we seek is the symbol not revealed here in this sketch. It may be a missing key for the interpretation of another artifact.” “Oh, I honestly don’t know if that is a possibility or not. I can speak to my client and discover whether or not they object to what you suggest,” Isabella said, managing to pull her hand free, and burying it in the folds of her skirt. She took a step back. His request seemed perfectly innocent, but she was convinced it was anything but transparent and she couldn’t think straight with him gazing into her eyes like that. He was so close she could smell the appealing aroma of rich espresso with cinnamon he had enjoyed recently. It was her own favorite after work pick-me-up. I hope you enjoyed the snippet I posted for Elizabeth this week. I'm sure glad NaNo is over! Now I get more attention and lots and lots of hugs. My treats are on time again too. Yea! It's NaNoWriMo, and my very first time participating in it, so of course you will be getting excerpts from my WIP, a novella, Stolen Secrets! If you have been following Book II of my Illuminati series, The Tree of Life, you will know that I just introduced a minor character, Prince Mukhtar, who appears in both Book I, The Book of Life, and Book 11, of the Illuminati Series. He is also the hero of a Romance Fantasy Novella I am writing for NaNoWriMo, a little spinoff adventure! In it, Isis has sent him to retrieve a chalice to be used in a ceremony that will break the spell the jinni, Ornias (from my short horror story) has cast upon the Ring of Solomon, before their mortal enemy, Set, can get his hands on it. The heroine, Lady Isabella Valentine, has been hired to retrieve the same artifact from an anonymous benefactor, who has sent a helper, David Khoury, to assist her on the archaeological dig. Prince Mukhtar wishes to change her mind. Here’s a bit from where I left off last week . . . (*Note: It's NaNo, so may be a bit rough in spots.) He made no move to accept it, but instead chuckled, a rich, deep timber that made her smile in response until he said, “Now you have not answered my question,” and she wished she had just shared an intimate joke so they could become better acquainted instead of parting company. “My services are already engaged, which is why I am not at liberty to say,” she said softly, lifting her hand and waving the sketch at him. He reached out to take the paper, but instead of accepting it, he clasped her hand and cradled it within his own. Something flickered in his eyes. Disappointment? Annoyance? I hope you liked the snippet I posted for Elizabeth this week while she's busy with NaNo! She gave me a chewy to play with and it even squeaks, so she can do whatever she wants as far as I'm concerned. I love toys! She took the drawing, happy to distract herself from the intensity of his stare, the penetrating azure gaze that both took her breath away and made her want to gasp in gulps of air to fuel the manic beating of her heart at his nearness. Then, recognition made her take in a slow, deep breath, as she willed herself to remain outwardly calm. She looked up and said, “May I ask why you are seeking this?” “So you are familiar with the piece,” he said as fact and not a question, and the small smile he bestowed upon her matched the warmth in his voice as if she had just passed some test at which he had hoped she would excel. “Yes, of course. Most in my field would recognize The Chalice of Isis. But you didn’t answer my question,” she persisted. “I have a buyer with bottomless pockets, of course. And do you know where it is located?” he asked, small dimples appearing in his cheeks. “I’m afraid I can’t help you,” Isabella said, handing him back the sketch. (*Note: It's NaNo, so may be a bit rough in spots.) “W-what?” She glanced toward the door and noted two more Bedouins, standing sentry on either side of the entryway. More, she knew, would be outside, no doubt tending to the beautiful black stallion of Prince Mukhtar, eldest son and heir of Sheikh Abdul Kummel al-Rahman, Leader of the Hassana. The gold agal of his kuffiyah might as well have been a crown, but the entourage he traveled with assured his identity could not be mistaken. “Forgive me, Lady Valentine,” he replied, this time in flawless English. “Allow me to introduce myself.” She held up her hand, and said, “No need for that, Prince Mukhtar. Everyone in Cairo knows who you are. But please do explain what you are talking about.” He bowed his head politely, and took a step closer. Looking down at her, he said softly, “Of course, My Lady, with pleasure; I wish to procure your services as an archaeologist. I seek this,” he said, pulling a drawing from somewhere within his robe and extending it toward her. I have been sharing from my short story "The Opal Ring" which is now available for preorder! and will be for sale on October 15th in Tell-Tale Publishing's Annual Horror Anthology. Previously we learned that Jasmine is her father's magician's assistant and uses true magic to enhance her father's performances. They have lived in her evil uncle's casino hotel in Cairo, Egypt, since the death of her mother. In an effort to escape her uncle, she has come up with a plan with the aid of her best friend, Ahmed, to boost her father's magic enough to secure a contract in Vegas and move back to America. The plan involves the legendary Ring of King Solomon, and the jinni it controls... “That ring--where did you get it?” “This?” Jasmine grasped the opal ring and began to tug on it, twisting and turning, but it refused to move. Her father grabbed her hand and pulled it until she finally cried out in protest. “We have to get it off,” he said, "how did you find it when I flushed it down the commode on the jet before we landed six years ago?” “What are you saying, father, you have seen this ring before?” He backed away and ran his hand through his hair, looking haggard, older than his forty-eight years of a sudden. “It was your mother’s. It was buried with her.” Description Over 250 pages of nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat thrills! “The Opal Ring” by Elizabeth Alsobrooks: Upon the death of her mother, Jasmine accompanies her distracted, grief-stricken father to her perverted uncle's hotel in Cairo, Egypt. She takes her mother's job and becomes the magician's assistant and also learns to enhance her father's magic with spells discovered from her mother's Book of Shadows. They carry on, but all is not as it seems. Behind the glitz and glamour the smiling facade is a true illusion. Jasmine is in danger and needs to escape the gilded cage in which she's imprisoned. Her magic, though strong, is not powerful enough, so she plans to use a talisman she acquires from an antiquities dealer with the help of her one true friend, Ahmed, the hotel's security assistant. The legendary ring of King Solomon will enable her to control a terrifying but powerful jinni. He will boost her father's magic enough to secure a contract in Vegas so they can return to America. But at what cost? "Mary-Margaret Callahan’s Perfect Day" by Joseph J. Christiano: Mary-Margaret doesn't have a perfect life. She doesn't have a perfect husband, or a perfect son. Her house, her garden and her job aren't perfect. In fact, some might say she's a pretty boring woman, with a somewhat miserable existence. Most people take her for granted, and those that do notice probably pity her, but not for long. Mary-Margaret isn't the sort of person that holds one's attention for too long. Sometimes her husband looks up from the paper to comment about something, usually something casual, or something critical. Her son usually likes to complain or to cuss. But Mary-Margaret has a plan. She's going to have a perfect day. A day just for herself. "The Vanishing of Princess Devonswan" by Daniel Hunter: The princess has vanished and it seems certain that she has been taken by the other-worldly creature rumored to inhabit the mysterious castle within the forbidden forest. Only her personal guard, Sir Victor Winchester, has the strength and determination to brave the labyrinth of corridors and ever-changing staircases that lead nowhere and then back to where he started. Only someone who cares for the princess as deeply as Victor would follow the sound of a lonely violin that draws him further into the depth of the sinister dwelling. And only a princess who cares enough for Victor's survival that she is both angry at him for coming after her and relieved to see him arrive would be resilient and tough enough to tell him to hurry--because when he finally finds the princess, it seems unlikely that either of them will escape what is racing toward them to end their lives. "The Keeper's Secret" by Robert James: Megan misses her mom, but her dad took her to Shawnee Point Lighthouse on Lake Michigan for her 17th birthday. That's where she met Joseph. He used to be the lighthouse keeper., and he's got a really big problem. He needs Megan to help him with it. She's the only one who can, but she might not be able to if her dad has her put back in the nut house. Her shrink isn't much help, aside from being a drunk, because he doesn't believe her any more than her dad does. The problem is that no one believes her. That's why she can't tell her dad about Joseph. He wouldn't understand. But how is it her fault that Joseph is a ghost and she can see and talk to him? To all of them? "Terrible Choices" by Patricia Mattern: When a research scientist is abducted by a cartel during a romantic getaway with his wife, he is faced with stunningly terrible choices:. Will he betray his government to save his family—or save his family and become a traitor? His captors have no idea that he is not as vulnerable as he seems. All his neurons will be working overtime as he outwits his captors and escapes, though not unscathed, from an unthinkable situation. I hope you enjoyed the snippet I posted for Elizabeth this week! I am so releaved that scary jinni is back in the ring, at least for now! But I need to find out how the ring was buried with her mother and her father flushed it down the toilet on a plane and now it's on Jasmine's hand...spooky! Last time I was sharing from The Opal Ring a short story I have coming out in the 2016 Horror Anthology from Tell-Tale Publishing being released in October at their annual online Halloween Horror Party--see sidebar banner regarding upcoming event for this year. Most folks agreed from my first sharing of The Opal Ring, that they hate the uncle--with good reason. So far we know the father's a magician and the mother has died so the daughter, Jasmine, is his assistant. She "aids" her father with a bit of her own "real" magic to enhance his show as she wants him to get a Las Vegas contract so they can leave Egypt and escape her vile uncle. I'll continue with a bit more from the same short story. ![]() This would be the second time she summoned the Jinn, and she knew what to expect, she told herself. Taking a deep breath, Jasmine rubbed the ring on the middle finger of her right hand. The air around her crackled and sparked, a pillar of fire shot from floor to ceiling, swirling like a tornado, scorching hot, with pain but no damage, like hell, and in a puff of black smoke it disappeared. In its place stood an eight foot Jinn, Ornias, once enslaved by King Solomon to carve stones for the building of the temple. According to the mystic tomes, his enslavement was punishment for stealing gems from the royal treasury, gems he craved for their sparkling light. He would sink his vampire-like fangs into them and drain their glimmer in an effort to relieve the agony of eternal darkness—a life without the sun’s blessing. This was the addiction Jasmine must feed in order to command the demonic Jinn’s magic. She concluded that his explosive manner of reappearance was certainly that of an escaping addict and it in no way reassured her. The Jinn was manlike in appearance, save that his skin was ebony not in an African ebony way, but more like a preternatural obsidian sheen with eyes that glowed golden like a cat’s, but with a sunset luster that spoke of darker, more underground locales than mountaintops or beach horizons. “I hunger!” he bellowed. I hope you enjoyed the snippet I posted from Elizabeth's scary story this week. I have decided that Jinn's are to be avoided at all costs! If I see one I am going to bite it and swallow its ring! I don't think I need to explain what will happen to it then!
