Insecure Writer's Support Group

Very few writers enjoy doing PR. Most can't afford to do as much as they should, which means they are instead required to invest face-time with guest readings or appearances, or to write and send out press releases, blogs and/or host special events.

All this takes away from what they love, which is writing. That is, after all, why they are writers. If they don't love it, they sure won't put up with the business end of writing. 

There are both pro and cons to online marketing. For one thing, who wants to throw a party to which no one comes? Not even the most reluctant wall flower. As if writing and putting your baby out there weren't terrifying enough, now you have to talk about it, to convince people to read it out of all the other "good" books out there, and to reach potential readers with promotions so they at least have the chance to hear about it. 

On the other hand, most online promotion is free or at least inexpensive, even if you spring for a "professional" blog tour, where unknown entities may or may not review your work, but y0u will hopefully alert a few more readers to your existence.  

But even finding out which of these avenues is the best, most reputable, offering the most bang for your buck eats away at your writing time. 

Personally, I am more insecure when doing PR than any other time, because it's more personal and intimate, you are closer to the source of both criticism and praise.  It makes me feel very vulnerable, so I try to make it fun for the readers whenever possible.
