I read somewhere that America will remain the land of the free only so long as it remains the home of the brave. It made me think. American Independence was possible due to the bravery and tenacity of a very special group of people. It's not all that surprising though. Those same people had already crossed a dangerous ocean to take up residence in a wild new land filled with more trials and unknowns than success stories. They had done so to seek freedom from religious tyranny. It's little wonder they would be willing to die for the preservation of that hard-earned sense of independent thoughts, beliefs and life choices. A lot of discussion surrounded the decision to unite behind the Declaration of Independence, and a lot of revision went into the final document. As an American I enjoy the results of this sovereign separation. As a writer I appreciate both the magnitude of the endeavor and the demand for freedom written into a declaration that was essentially an act of treason. It's the who, what, where and when of why I can write what I want, or in other words think what I wish, without fear of censor or punishment. This does of course pressupose I have no desire to incite riot or anarchy--as well it should. The point however is that we as writers are all very lucky to live in such a land of freedom. We must also have the bravery to continue to ensure future generations can read and write their choice of topics or authors. Illuminated texts must be cherished, but with the advance of technology at least burning books can't ensure they will never be read again. Enjoy your independence while supporting your fellow writers and their right to write! Insecure Writer's Support Group Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds! Posting: The first Wednesday of every month is officially Insecure Writer’s Support Group day. Post your thoughts on your own blog. Talk about your doubts and the fears you have conquered. Discuss your struggles and triumphs. Offer a word of encouragement for others who are struggling. Visit others in the group and connect with your fellow writer - aim for a dozen new people each time. Don't forget to thank co-hosts for the July 2 posting of the IWSG: Krista McLaughlin, Kim Van Sickler,Heather Gardner, and Hart Johnson!

We are very lucky to be in a place where do we have freedom to write what we want and what we love! I'm glad to live here. Hopefully our freedom will remain. Have a great 4th of July weekend!

Timely post! We do need to support and nurture each other. We all have that right in the U.S. to write what inspires us. We also have the right not to read what we don't want to. What an incredible country!

You said it! People complain, but I've lived in several foreign countries, and most don't realize how good they have it here. Trying saying or writing whatever you want in a Middle Eastern country.

I was thinking about that the other day when I read a post by a woman who lived most of her life in the Middle East. It's terrifying to think about.

I also very frequently feel lucky to live where we do! Author Jaqueline Winspear, who just became a naturalized US Citizen, wrote a lovely post on the same topic that you might enjoy: http://goo.gl/xcyg26
